Dear Dhamma Friends,
I am glad to share this encouraging news about Sayadaw's health condition. Oncologist Dr. Huang told me today that Sayadaw's Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) condition is improving slowly but surely. The oxygen supply level from the ventilator machine has been reduced to 40% since yesterday and the Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) level has been reduced to 5.0 today. He said Sayadaw is practically breathing on his own. Sayadaw has no more fever and his blood pressure is also normal. Sayadaw's blood hemoglobin level becomes normal and there is no infection detected in any other internal organs.
Dr. Huang also said the pulmonologist will stop giving sedation to Sayadaw tomorrow to wake him up. The doctor will then turn off the ventilator for a few minutes as a test to see how Sayadaw will breathe without the help of the ventilator. It will be just a test and the doctor will turn the machine back on. If the test is successful and if Sayadaw can breathe on his own without any problem, the doctors will remove the breathing tubes from Sayadaw's throat and lungs in the next couple of days.
This is a big improvement and we all are very encouraged by this good news. I hope that with this steady recovery pace, Sayadaw could go back to the monastery within a month or so. However, Dr. Huang cautioned me that Sayadaw's lungs are not normal yet. It will take a while to recover from this ARDS and may take a few months. During that time, it is very important not to get any infection to Sayadaw.
Please keep on rediating your metta towards Sayadaw and pray for his speedy recovery.
